Hi
I have placed the web site error list for the Great Britain Specialised Stamp Catalogue Volume 4, Part 2 2010 Updates/corrections - September 2010 onto this post, it is in a word type document on Google so it is more easier to print and adjust where necessary.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/16AUbuNGI258LQ46US0MUYHtBhncjeVavQL-Wwy3ey3A/edit?hl=en

It is open for everyone to look at and use. I hope this works as I have never done this before, please let me know if it does not.

Looks fine to me Melvyn - thanks for that.

I have changed the title slightly and made it a "sticky" so it stays at the top of the forum.

Well done Melvyn,
The list is already worryingly long........

In the new March SGM there is an advert for SG Vol3 12th Edition due Feb 11...............I don't even want to go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"A thoroughly researched catalogue"...."recognised as the standard guide"...."an enormous number of additions and improvements" (sic!)......"absolutely indespensible"....

>printing errors added for your inconvenience and annoyance<

BUYERS BEWARE !!!!!!

Alex.

I count 184 corrections, some as simple and mis-spelling "Fluorescent", and others so major that the unknowing collector could be greatly misled looking for something that simply does not exist.
Or, having something in his hand that is not to be found anywhere.
.
For a reference book it comes under the general category of a true "Cluster F___."

As I am in the process of researching various NVI Ranges at the moment I may find other mistakes not on the list therefore if in the future update it with a new find I will highlight the new addition so it is easy to spot and will notify with a post.

I have altered some codes to their original list as I have found that they can't even produce this right, these will be highlighted in blue where alterations have been made.

Hi,
Just noticed that SG have provided an updated list of corrections, i.e:

http://www.stanleygibbons.com/images/sg/documents/gb_spec_4_revised_corrections_may_2011.pdf

I haven't reviewed how beneficial it is.

enjoy!
Ian.

Thanks to everyone's input I have not purchased this catalogue as much as I'd like to have the reference material. However, looking at the ever growing list of errors I realize I would spend more time looking at nine pages of corrections and would probably be more confused then ever. It is very unfortunate that SG did not see fit to redo the catalogue. Perhaps in their infinite wisdom they will see fit to re-publish in 2012. I will say that as a result of this I will wait and scrutinize other collectors thoughts before buying anymore SG products. They are such a great resource but I guess I can do without future issues since I already have Volumes 1-4 and these should last a while.

For those interested, I contacted SG yesterday to enquire as to plans for a new version of Volume 4. Aside from the lengthy general marketing content of their reply, the following sentence appeared;

"We are sorry to inform you that the catalogue you seek is presently out of print and there are no immediate plans for a future release."

Very disappointing. Whilst I primarily use Deegam, the SG books do hold some additional info that is helpful.

I don't think the Connoisseur online gets much update attention and the MCC catalogue is not great in my opinion.....especially since the new version would require a spend of over 100 to get the parts of relevance to me...and always looks like rehash of the Connoisseur catalogue anyway in terms of content.

I don't think they would dare reprint it without removing the errors ...
I haven't been through the error list for a long time but funnily enough I was looking at my copy of the book yesterday and happened to notice they can't even spell "Machin" correctly in the title on pages 229-231 spelling it as Macjhin".

I too predominantly use a combination of Deegam and the MBPC online catalogue, however there are elements of the Machin environment that are not catered for in either for example the small printing varieties such as "scratch through queen's nose" which can sometimes help in identification if nothing else.

I also agree with crazyh1 regarding the MCC catalogue ... an absolute waste of money in my view.

So, of course, I immediately reached over to the corner of my desk and checked, not because I disbelieved you, but to enjoy the irony.
All three pages at the top.
But then I noticed on page 231 the last note at the bottom "dated in Error" lists an FDC from "Enfield, Middx"< .....
I suppose they meant Middlesex ?
Which brings up its own puzzlement, but I'll leave that to your imagination.
Another thouight about an FDC with stamps issues in 1990. Was Enfield not absorbed into Greater London in the 1960s ?

Hi Charlie... "Middx" is an accepted abbreviation of the County Middlesex (where I was born incidentally) so that probably is not an error.
Hadn't thought of it like that.. strange how you see a name for years and don't realise the connotation.

To be honest Middlesex doesn't really exist as a stand-alone county any more (except for the cricket team of course). It has all been absorbed into Greater London by now I would imagine.

I wondered about that spelling . I would have thought something like "Midex" would be used, but then shortcuts seem to be hard to predict.

Thanks for the update Ian ... After taking a look I see they have given up after page 222 (so the above reported error hasn't been spotted by them) and even this update is dated May 2011.

I think they have probably washed their hands of this particular version of this catalogue and hoping that by the next time they produce one (2033 maybe). everyone who bought this version will either be too old (or even passed on) to worry. Rolling Eyes

And people wonder why so many dedicated stampers have given up on Gibbons.
And Scott as well.

Hi, I heard this week from a bookshop, that Stanley Gibbons will not be publishing the next edition of this book until 2017, although I suspect the editing process may take a lot longer than the last one did. Laughing

And I suspect they didn't edit it at all.

Am I correct in assuming that SG doesn't maintain a 2010-2017 online listing for collectors and that you have to purchase SGM every month to get the new issue numbering?

no, the online GSM and archive is available ... good value for subscription. it is the print version that is sidelined. I suggested a pdf version of future SGS editions ...
