This is a bit of a treasure.

I cannot find it mentioned in Deegam, but perhaps I have not looked hard enough.

Ebay item 150506912504 "GB QE2 ERROR 1998 GOLDEN MACHIN NVI...MISSING VALUE" available at a cool 480

Great find.
I have never seen one of these (nor heard of one) nor it appears has SG according to their new Vol2 Specialised. I have also checked a 2007 version of the MCC catalogue and it doesn't appear there either.

I would want to know a lot more about its provenance before I spent 480.

I am not suggesting it is not genuine, it is being sold by a very reputable eBay dealer - I have bought several items from him myself in the past.

However in this case - I think this is almost certainly a new find and I am surprised at the lack of media coverage.

I have never submitted a stamp to expertising in my life - but if I had found this in a collection - I think it would be a first. It must enhance its value to have some sort of provenance.

In DGR73-15 (August 2007) there is an illustration of a Royal Blue large head with no value and a discussion of a gray, a green and a dark blue example that were apparently created to test a new digital engraving system.
This is mentioned in Appendix 13, page 30. These items were "Engraved by Lasergrvure System 700" whatever that is, and printed for Crossfield Electronics LTD, by Harrison & Sons.

Some time ago in one of the older DGRs, there was a short note about "Computer Concoctions and Photoshop Fakes". In it Doug points out what should be obvious to anyone paying attention that to todays digital world; " ... Images taken by today's digital cameras can be manipulated and changed so that they bear little or no resemblance to what the photographer saw through the viewfinder. ..."
..........
" ... This ability to add or take away, together with the cheapness of today's colour printers, can be, indeed has been, used to create apparently disireable stamps with a Machin connection...."
The note goes on to add that often such ephemera can acquire a genuine cancellation when affixed to an envelope alongside a genuine postage stamp. So, looking at this item I would suggest that a certificate of authenticity be obtained before any money changes hands.

When I get the chance I'll find the exact DGR where that that was discussed.
