Hello,

I've been checking my cylinder blocks of the Hong Kong Machins, trying to work out the Direction of Printing, and then also checking them against the list in the Deegam Handbook. I've found that there are quite a few I have which aren't listed in the Handbook - and, sadly, some that are in the Handbook that I don't have! My list is underneath, and I'd be really grateful if anybody could let me know the DOP for any blocks I don't have on the list - I don't have all the combinations of cylinder numbers and requisition numbers.

The interesting thing is that all the printings of low value sheet stamps from 1992 appear to have had inverted DOP, but four coil stamps from that period (the 80c, 90c, $1.80 and $2.30) had upright DOP. All low value sheet stamps with phosphor bands, and from about 1994 on, had upright DOP. Most low value stamps from 1993 had inverted DOP, but some had upright DOP, and the $2 appears to have come out in late 1992 with upright DOP. All coil stamps from 1993 on had inverted DOP, except for the 10c, which is a little cracker of a coil issue. I have a coil strip with blue PVA gum which I bought at the HK GPO in April 1996, and this has inverted DOP. I then have a virtually identical coil strip I bought at the HK GPO in September 96, and this has upright DOP! And I then have a coil strip with white gum -probably to be dated in 1996 as well, as Enschede moved from blue gum to white gum in late 1995 - and this has upright DOP.

Here is the list of sheet stamps:

$2 Req C, Head Cyl 1, June 92 - inverted
$2 Head Cyl 3 - upright (this cylinder number is only recorded from Req G, late 1992, but I wonder if it was not also used under Req N in 1993, as this would otherwise be the only upright DOP stamp from 1992. Sadly I don't have the requisition number on my block)

I'm missing quite a few of the cylinders of the three high values, but a contact has indicated he might be able to get me some more in November. Here's hoping! Anyway, if anybody can help fill out the list, please let me know.

Best wishes

Daniel

For those who are interested - I got cylinder blocks of the $10, $20 and $50 from Requisitions U (1994), M (April 1996) and N (October 1996 - the very last printing of the Hong Kong Machin definitives!) recently. The head cylinder numbers were 2 (req. U), 5 (M) and 5 (N - which is how we know the blocks aren't from the 1993 requisition N - those were head cylinder 2).

All three printings had sideways right DOP. So I guess we can say for sure that stamps issued since 1994 had this DOP. I just need to find blocks from requisition N from 1993 to pin down the changeover!

Cheers

A couple of updates. I now have blocks of the high values from 1993's Requisition N. All are sideways right DOP, indicating that for the high values at least only the first printing was sideways left.

I also have blocks of all values from 1992's first printing, Requisition C. All of the 'low' values have inverted DOP, which matches what I had found before. Doesn't quite pin down transitions to upright DOP for the low values, but at least we know for sure that the first printing was all inverted!

Cheers

I hope you are clear of all the flooding we have been reading about. I expect there will be massive flooding in the US next month when it rains and all the snow melts at the same time.
Time to move the albums up to the attic.

Thanks Charlie. Yes, all clear, although even Canberra where I live has been pretty wet. Sadly, I don't have an attic!
