I recently purchased an album containing various machins. Some were side marked in pencil on the album page as ‘Wilson fakes?’. It looks like someone questioned that the stamps involved could be fake and from Mr. Wilson (I believe he was / is based in Luton).

What did Alan(?) Wilson actually fake - gum, print, phosphor, anything else? Anyone out there with an idea? And how would one go about identifying a Wilson fake?

Thanks, Marc

Hi Marc,

yes, Alan Wilson. back in the 90s I think it was. He was a prominent specialised Machin dealer, but strayed from the straight and narrow when he started creating varieties and selling them as new discoveries at premium prices. In the end the law caught up with him and he came clean. Apparently he reimbursed all those who bought the dodgy stamps, but many remained 'out there'. Largely it was unusual phosphor varieties. As Douglas Myall puts it (and I paraphrase), beware of phoshor bands in unusual places or numbers, although the forgeries are not hard to spot to the experienced eye. In other words, check for appropriate phosphorescence for anything odd. They aren't that common though, in fact the forgeries themselves command decent prices when they come up for sale.

Thanks for that Scott.
Yup, I've got 3 fakes - at least I think so. I wouldn't know if they are from Wilson or whoever. But the trick is under the SW phosphor lamp.

Stamps in question are (if they were real Wink)
- 170.7.1c (DP82)
- 170.7.3b (DP82)
- 180.4.1b (DP93)

They look perfect in day light - you can see the bands in 'slanting' light.
But when I switch on the SW lamp and compare them to their counterparts, I get no afterglow on the bands and they are appear slightly more yellowish.

So , I'll classify them as fake. Damn good ones at that!
