Hi all

i am not a machin specialist but have a small and eclectic collection of anything that intrigues me.

recently i bought this booklet pane from the 1984 Christian Heritage booklet, which i understand is the only source of the SG X886 10p type II with phosphor bands.

When i received it I was disappointed to see 'crease' marks across the 10p stamp but on closer inspection i think it may be an error or variety. the surface is pristine and there is no apparent disturbance to the gum at the back.

any advice on this would be gratefully received, is this a known variety?

although i have no intention of selling, any idea what it may be worth?

regards
Dave

Hi Dave,
If this is a known variety it will be listed in the SG Version 4 Vol 1 Specialised Catalogue, which I have a copy of.
Unfortunately I won't be back home until the 9th August so if no-one else has come up with an answer by then I will check it out for you.

I have looked through my copy of the SG Specialised Catalogue Vol 4 Part 1 and I cannot see this stamp listed anywhere. It is certainly not under the two band type II stamp from the Christian Heritage PSB which this pane is from.
Looking at the scan supplied the 17p and 10p all appear to be under inked and very pale. I wonder if this is what has caused the effect.

Thanks Chester cat, I'm not sure if the apparent paleness is more a function of my fairly ancient scanner which is good on detail but not too good on colour or tone.

Confused

I include a pic from my iPhone below which is less detailed but more realistic colour

Thanks for showing the clearer scan of this pane but I still cannot find this in the SG Specialised Catalogue Vol.4 Part 1. Do you know where it is listed?

Unless this is something just discovered, this is just another disappointment in the most recent Gibbons Specialized.
It is invaluable for what it contains and amazingly frustrating for what it doesn't.

OK - I am back but I am afraid I am going to be no more enlightening than previous contributors. I certainly agree with Charlie on the "value" of the Gibbons work. I also can find no reference to this on the Type 2 10p from the CH booklet pane UEP19.

Had this been an area in which the Deegam handbook dealt I would immediately have been in contact with Doug to point out a new find.
I know he is dependant on other collectors to point out any new irregularities that he may himself have never seen. However this particular variety is of no interest to Deegam.

You could try similar with SG although I have to say I doubt they will even return your email... but you can try.

Were it my copy I would keep it with the notation that it's an unknown variety with the hope or expectation that (in my lifetime) this issue is resolved by another collector with influence within SG or at worst (when i am no longer around) that my heirs were able to find an enlightened dealer who may offer a substantial sum for it.

I'd do exactly that. Since I haven't seen one, when I get home I'll go through the file of 10p issues especiallt the big envelope of ones set aside in the Someday file to see what I can see.
Charlie

PS: I'll be home in September.

I have a booklet with a similar flaw on the 10p stamp. I was unsure if was a flaw or slight damage to the pane. After seeing this report I now have it marked up mentally as a flaw.

Saying this I do not think it will be of great value.

Thanks all for your advice! Smile

I guess I'll hang onto this pane then, it's just the sort of idiosyncratic thing that appeals to me.

I try and message SG for what it's worth

Interesting that there may be more than one of these kicking about Cool

I know it has been a time since this topic was discussed, but did anyone ever report this find to Gibbons?

I will sort out my copy and post an image here for evaluation. watch this space.

an archive of GSM is online for year 2017-2010. each monthly includes a section extending the SGS catalog ... Hugh Jeffries (SG) will only append mint vars that are discovered.\\

the archive is to be extended to 1967 ...

Unfortunately eBay listings expire after a certain length of time so I have uploaded the images.
