G'day from Australia. I'm new to this forum but have been collecting used Machin's (off and on) for many years but purely in an amateurish way. I found this site recently and thought I might join in to learn some more.

One query I have concerns the 1 1.2 p black. I have a number of these, which I thought had no phosphor bands but having noted somewhere that soaking can remove much of the evidence for such, closer inspection has revealed that they all do possess some signs of double-banding. However, these bands are variable in width and not finding any indication on your site or elsewhere, that this variation exists, I was wondering if others have found the same.

Hi AJ,
Firstly welcome to the forum and a happy new year to you in Oz.

The forum is lucky enough to have a dedicated collector of postally used Machins as a (founding) member - and I am sure he will offer his advice whenever he can .. until then ... a little note on the 1d.

All have 2 Bands unless one of the error types (missing phosphor or missing one band etc). They can be collected from either sheets or booklets only so the sources are limited.

Deegam Handbook denotes five main types with major differences (DG15.1-15.5), mainly in the paper and/or gum used.

HOWEVER all are 9.5mm bands so I am not sure where you are seeing different width bands UNLESS what you have is what is known as INSET BANDS ... I don't want to list the whole of Deegam here but if you are interested in collecting to that level, you probably should invest a few pounds (dollars?) in purchasing the latest DVD.

I have no financial interest at all in publicising the Deegam Handbook above any other, but if you are (or want to become) a serious Machin collector the information that this provides (not just the listings) is incomparable to any other tome in a similar market.
